Thanksgiving and Arenal

Once again we hosted our teacher friends from CDS – Jack and Lily (newly appointed Head of Elementary School!), Oscar and Naomi, Dave and Kennan, Howard, visiting from Seattle and 12 kids!

What a warm and wonderful evening.
The next morning, we packed up Ethan (our SUV) and headed to Arenal to meet up with Alex, Alexis and their kids to spend a few days by the volcano. We had waffled for a day or two about whether or not to take the trip – Hurricane Otto was on its way. Sadly, it hit a couple of hours north of the volcano and caused a lot of damage to that community. But where we were, it was mainly clear skies.

The gang trouped up Cerro Chato.  Alexis hurtled up the slopes like a mountain goat on steroids while the rest of us hiked like beleaguered buffalo wallowing in the mud. The gang got bloodied and muddied while Ilana, with her sprained ankle, had her cuticles shined and dined on bonbons at the thermal spa.  The hot springs were idyllic, except that she almost accidentally got into a natural spring with this caiman…. That would have been quite a story.
